Recruitment

Information for Prospective Students

Please carefully read all of the following information before contacting me.

Available Positions

Currently, I do not have any funded positions open. However, there are positions available for one or more outstanding applicants who qualify for an international scholarship through UQ, or an Australian government Research Training Scholarship position. These scholarships are extremely competitive, but possible to get if you have strong evidence of research ability. Please get in touch with me if you think you may qualify for either of these programs and are interested in working with me.

I am available for supervision of honours or masters students at UQ.

Candidates for a PhD program should have at least one of the following:

  • A first class honours degree in Computer Science or an adjacent field such as Mathematics or Electrical Engineering from an Australian University;

  • Rank in the top 20% of the class and attend a good national university;

  • Rank in the top 30% of the class and attend a top 50 university; or

  • Have a publication in an information retrieval or algorithms conference or journal such as SIGIR, WSDM, ECIR, WWW, SIGKDD, SIGMOD, VLDB, TKDE, EMNLP, ACL, TOIS, …

In addition, it is useful to have any of the following:

  • Top programming ability, especially in systems languages like C, C++, or Rust, as evidenced by a portfolio such as a Github account;

  • A recommendation letter from a well respected academic in the field; or

  • Suitable industry experience in the project area.

How to Apply

The best thing to do is to send me an email with a brief sketch of who you are, why you want to pursue a research career, what you’d like to work on, and how you think our interests align. You can include your CV, any appropriate publications or links to portfolios, academic transcripts, and so on. Please try to keep the email short and aim to address the selection criteria above.
